Ben-X Vorige Naar overzicht Volgende

Painting With Light (PWL) has created the visual concept and designed video and lighting for the highly anticipated new theatre production of ‘Ben X'.

The ground-breaking show about a boy with autism who escapes into a fantasy computer game world to escape bullying, is directed by Frank van Laecke and opened on September 13th at the Stadsschouwburg Theatre in Antwerp. PWL's Luc Peumans was asked to work on the show by producers. His visual concept encompasses fast camera-work, massive projections and dramatic lighting, fused with beautifully composed music.

Upstage is a large 10 mm pitch semi-transparent curved LED video screen which is at the core of the stage design, and used as a dramatic vehicle to traverse between the two very different environments of reality and fantasy. The screen gives full HD 2084 by 704 pixel rendition and was specially developed for Belgian rental company Phlippo Showlight, the production's audio, video and lighting suppliers. Video artist Frank De Wulf came onboard as part of the Painting With Light team to create the video content .... which forms the backbone of the show. The screen opens for entrances and exits, and in the foreground are 26 scenic cubes, fronted with the same 10 mm LED screen material. The screen also masks actors appearing ghost-like behind it, and lighting effects can also be shone through making it a truly multi-layered canvass. Video playback is run via the latest Coolux Pandora's Box pro Quad v5.1media server technology, with all footage fitted precisely to the screen areas. The high shine black gloss floor was chosen for its reflective effects for both the lighting and video treatments.Lighting is used intelligently and appropriately as Peumans skilfully weaves together the synergies of music, digital art and technology in an original ‘crossover' approach.
